Pfeiffer HiPace 80: when does the operating fluid reservoir need changing, and what happens if you skip it?

Pfeiffer schedules it as Level 1 maintenance, typically every four years or at the interval the controller reports, whichever comes first. The part is PM 143 740 -T (also written PM143740-T or PM143740T) and it is a felt reservoir impregnated with TL 11 oil, supplied with the O-rings needed to close the pump back up.

The reservoir is not a filter and it is not a sump. It is the only lubrication path to the mechanical bearing at the fore-vacuum end of the rotor, and it works by capillary feed. When the felt dries out, the feed simply stops — there is no low-level warning, no pressure drop, nothing on the controller until the bearing itself starts to go.

What we see on the pumps that come in: a HiPace that has run past its reservoir interval usually arrives with bearing noise and an elevated current draw, and by then the bearing and often the rotor shaft seat are involved. A reservoir kit is a modest part. A bearing job on an 80-class turbo is not, and a damaged shaft seat makes the pump uneconomic to repair. This is the clearest case in the whole turbo range where the scheduled part is much cheaper than the unscheduled one.

Two things get ordered wrong. First, the reservoir is specific to the pump size: HiPace 80 takes PM 143 740 -T, HiPace 300 takes PM 143 451 AT, HiPace 400/700 takes PM 143 452 AT — they are not interchangeable. Second, PFPE-lubricated variants exist for oxygen and aggressive service and use a different reservoir; if your pump ran on PFPE, a TL 11 reservoir is the wrong part.

Send the pump model and serial number and say whether the pump is the standard hydrocarbon version or a PFPE build. If the pump is already noisy, tell us — we will say plainly whether a reservoir still makes sense or whether you are past that point, rather than shipping a part that will not save the pump.
