Shimadzu TMP-V2304LM: when do the bearings need replacing, and what does it cost you to wait?

The TMP-V2304LM is a magnetically levitated turbomolecular pump, so the bearings people ask us about are almost always the touch-down bearings, not running bearings. They carry the rotor only when the magnetic levitation drops out — a power loss, an emergency stop, a controller fault. Every one of those events spends part of their life, and the count is what sets the replacement interval, not calendar time.

That is the single most useful thing to know about this pump, and it is why two identical machines can need bearings years apart. A tool that trips once a quarter and a tool that trips weekly wear them at completely different rates. If your controller logs touch-down events, that log is your maintenance schedule.

What we see on the pumps that come into our workshop: by the time a customer notices something, the symptom is usually a longer run-up time or an unbalance reading that will not settle after a restart. Noise comes later and costs more. A pump that has been run on worn touch-down bearings through several more trips will damage the rotor as well, and at that point it is a rotor job, not a bearing job.

On identity — Shimadzu writes this model as TMP-V2304LM, with the hyphen. Order lists and e-mails often carry it squashed as TMPV2304LM, and both refer to the same pump. If your paperwork shows TPM2003LM or similar, that is a transposition of TMP-2003LM, a different and smaller pump; worth checking before you order.
