How to choose a claw vacuum pump

Claw pumps use two claw-shaped rotors turning in opposite directions without touching each other or the housing. Gas is drawn in, compressed as the claws sweep past the outlet port, and discharged — all without lubricant in the pumping chamber and without wearing parts in the gas path. That gives oil-free operation with very low maintenance and stable performance over long continuous duty.

Size on pumping speed at the working pressure your process actually holds, and confirm the ultimate pressure of the specific stage arrangement — single-stage claw pumps serve rough vacuum, while multi-stage claw and claw/Roots combinations reach lower. Look at the drive (fixed speed or variable), cooling method, noise, and whether corrosion-resistant or ATEX/oxygen-service variants exist if your gas needs them.

Typical duties: central vacuum supply for packaging and handling, food and beverage lines, pneumatic conveying, printing and woodworking, environmental and soil-remediation systems. Where an installation runs three shifts and cannot tolerate oil mist or frequent service, claw pumps repay their higher purchase price quickly.

FAQ

Where are claw vacuum pumps used?

Continuous industrial duty where the process must stay oil-free: packaging, pneumatic conveying, drying, and central vacuum systems. Two claw-shaped rotors turn in opposite directions without touching each other or the housing, so there is no oil in the pumping chamber and no wearing seal.

How does a claw pump compare with a screw pump?

Both are dry and non-contacting. Claw pumps are typically more energy-efficient at their design point and quieter; screw pumps tolerate particulates and condensate better because the geometry conveys solids to the exhaust. Choose by what is in the gas stream.

What maintenance does a claw pump need?

Gearbox oil changes, shaft seal checks, inlet filter cleaning and cooling air path cleaning. There is no oil and no seal strip in the pumping chamber, so routine maintenance is light — but the gearbox lubricant still has an interval.
